What happens when you don’t see the value in what you do

I attended my first UK camp meeting over the last few days.

Camp meeting is something that’s common in the church I attend and something I’ve known about from when I was a kid. I remember it being a period when the congregation met more frequently than on the usual service day, and it was a big deal. I’ve been to camp meeting in Kenya, but I recently had the opportunity to attend my first one in the UK. I hadn’t been to one here before, and I don’t really know why...

In fact, it was only on my last trip to Kenya that I happened to be in the country during camp meeting season and experienced it as an adult. So, even though I’ve been to camp meeting in Kenya, I haven’t actually been to that many.

In the UK, it’s different. Camp meeting is often held outside your local church and, many times, outside your local city. For many people, it can be a travelling distance away, which means you also have to think about where you’ll stay, what you’ll eat and all the other logistics that come with travelling.

But when I say I don’t really know why I hadn’t been to camp meeting in the UK, yes, the travel, location and planning may have been a factor.

But if I’m being honest, I think there was something deeper.

My spiritual journey simply wasn’t in a place where I was actively seeking to be in spaces that were geared towards growing my faith or helping me grow spiritually.

I would hear about camp meeting, but I wouldn’t pay close attention to it.

There are things in your life that you do because you see the value in them. And there are things that you don’t do because you don’t see the value in them. Often we don’t even realise this is what we are doing but it is so.

Until you find the value in what you’re doing, you will not do it. Even if it seems like the good thing to do, the Christian thing to do, or the logical Christian thing to do, if you don’t see the value in it, you just won’t do it.

And this is where we can find ourselves coming up with excuses to justify our decisions.
